Middle Percy Island seeks volunteer caretakers for free living
A tropical island of almost 20 square kilometres seeks volunteer caretakers. It sits 125 kilometres south-east of Mackay. They need help maintaining infrastructure and conservation work.
Middle Percy Island has just two people living there. It's looking for volunteer caretakers to live rent-free and maintain the island and its heritage.
The island can grow five times larger. Volunteers must commit to at least a year.
They need to support themselves, but accommodation is free. Current residents maintain gardens, an apiary and grazing animals.
They welcome visiting yachties during the dry season. Beekeeping and leatherwork help fund maintenance.
Director Cathryn Radclyffe said they want skilled volunteers who understand the island's traditions of hospitality and conservation. One resident is Ralph Ender.
He arrived at the start of the year. He is restoring his home, a wooden octagonal structure that had been untouched for five years.
