Nirranda wins fifth consecutive Warrnambool premiership
Nirranda defeated Allansford 15.6 (96) to 10.10 (70) in Saturday's grand final to claim its fifth straight senior football flag.
The Warrnambool powerhouse clinched the flag under co-coaches Daniel Beard and James Willsher, who replaced Isaac Templeton, who stepped down due to work commitments four rounds into the season. The Blues appeared in their seventh consecutive grand final.
Remarkably, despite five consecutive premierships, Nirranda has finished top of the ladder only twice in that span. The Blues got the better of their opponents in the third term and led 10.4 (64) to 9.7 (61) with a quarter to go.
Beard credited the playing group's consistency. He said the longer the match went, the team's defensive pressure wore down their opponents.
