BYD is recalling more than 32,000 Shark 6 vehicles after defects cause spare wheels to fall off vehicles during use.
BYD has issued an urgent recall for more than 32,000 Shark 6 utes across Australia after a dangerous defect was discovered in the spare wheel storage system. Vehicles manufactured between August 2024 and June 2026 are affected.
Incorrect installation, poor positioning or loose fastening can cause the spare wheel support cable to wear abnormally, letting the wheel fall off mid-drive. Drivers have reported spare tyres removing themselves from vehicles and swinging wildly during commutes.
BYD says the fault could cause serious injury or death. The company will replace the cable with a sturdier chain at no cost.
BYD is Australia's second most-sold car brand and the Shark 6 was the nation's most-searched ute in 2026.
