EV lobby wants pollution tax on Australia's petrol and diesel drivers
Australia's EV lobby wants petrol drivers to pay existing fuel tax plus new distance charges as a pollution surcharge.
Australia's fuel excise currently sits at 53.7 cents per litre and helps fund roads. The government is working on a new pay-per-kilometre road charge to replace lost revenue as electric car sales grow.
The Australian Electric Vehicle Association wants combustion-powered cars to pay both the existing fuel tax and the new distance charges. The Australian Electric Vehicle Association also proposes a pollution tax on petrol and diesel cars.
More than 85 per cent of its members back this idea. The proposal aims to encourage a switch to electric vehicles while making combustion cars pay for air pollution costs.
