NSW police seized 36 illegal ebikes on Sydney's northern beaches on Friday following recent dangerous riding incidents. One bike, owned by a 14-year-old from Warriewood, could reach speeds of more than 90km/h.
Police were granted new powers in late August to destroy ebikes that exceed Australia's legal speed limit of 25km/h power assistance. Owners have 14 days to appeal the seizure before the bikes are crushed.
Some riders modify their ebikes to go much faster, reaching motorcycle-like speeds. Assistant Commissioner David Driver said police would launch more operations across NSW in coming weeks.
Ebike injuries are surging. NSW recorded 226 injuries in 2024 and 233 injuries plus four deaths in the first seven months of 2025.
