Sam Goodman wins IBF interim super bantamweight boxing title in Tokyo
Australian boxer Sam Goodman won a unanimous points decision over Japan's Ryosuke Nishida. He claimed the IBF interim super bantamweight world title.
Sam Goodman, 27, is from Albion Park on the NSW South Coast. Goodman outpointed former IBF champion Ryosuke Nishida in a tough all-action fight in Tokyo.
The judges scored it 114-111, 116-109, and 115-110 in Goodman's favour. The two fighters lost points for fouls.
Goodman lost one for a headbutt. Nishida lost two for low blows.
Goodman fought at close range for much of the bout despite taking heavy body shots. He mixed steady movement with aggressive punching.
He landed steady shots to Nishida's head and body and threw plenty of uppercuts. Nishida cut Goodman in the third round.
But Goodman also opened a cut on the Japanese fighter. Goodman is now unbeaten at super bantamweight.
He still has a chance to fight Naoya Inoue, the undisputed division champion.
