Western Australia approves $807.3m Royal Perth Hospital emergency department
The WA Planning Commission approved six-storey emergency department plans. This is part of an $807.3 million upgrade to Royal Perth Hospital.
Planners approved plans for the new emergency department at Royal Perth Hospital. Ambulance bays will be split across two floors.
Six bays on the main floor will handle priority 1 patients needing immediate resuscitation. An underground level will have 10 bays for priority 2 patients.
The new building will also house same-day treatment units and mental health services. It will have cardiac care and surgical wards across its six storeys.
Main construction is expected to start later this year. The department will open in late 2028.
The facility is designed with space for mass casualty events and extra emergency beds. The exact bed count will be decided during detailed design.
