$13.3 million levee will protect 210 Katherine homes following March's worst flood in almost three decades.
Katherine was hit by its worst flooding since 1998 when the river peaked in March. Authorities described months of extreme weather, including two tropical cyclones in a single wet season.
The NT government has committed $13.3 million to build a new 3-kilometre levee in Katherine South. The levee will feature 1.6-metre high dirt embankments and a 1.5-metre high levee wall, protecting 210 homes and businesses.
Road raising works are planned on Murphy Street, Murray Street, and Bicentennial Road. Combined with an existing northern levee, the structure should protect against floods up to a one-in-20-year level.
