NSW opens paediatric trauma institute after Bondi attacks
NSW is building a paediatric trauma institute at Sydney Children's Hospital. It will prepare medical teams for serious child injuries.
A new institute will open at Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick within six months. The institute focuses on emergency care for seriously injured children.
The NSW Institute for Paediatric Trauma brings together clinicians, researchers and specialists. The clinicians, researchers and specialists will deliver training and run simulations across the health system.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the move follows the Bondi Beach and Bondi Junction attacks. Dr Guy Henry is a trauma specialist.
He says children's bodies and injuries are very different from adults. This means they need different medical care.
Children get internal organ injuries, e-bike crashes and burns more often than adults do. Regular training helps medical teams respond better.
Mass casualty simulations also help them prepare. Training will begin at Randwick.
It will then expand across regional NSW and the ACT.
