Melbourne hit by heaviest October rain in years as storms drench south-east
Melbourne recorded its highest daily rainfall since April 2024, receiving 47.8mm from 9am with 25mm in one hour.
Severe storms swept across south-east Australia on Thursday afternoon, plunging Melbourne into darkness around 3pm. The city and surrounding areas saw 20 to 50mm of rain, triggering some flash flooding in creeks and under bridges.
Emergency services responded to more than 200 calls, including six water rescues and calls for help with 71 building damage reports and 44 fallen trees. South Australia also copped significant rainfall, with 20 to 25mm across parts of the Adelaide Hills.
More rain is expected to continue Friday and Saturday, with eastern Victoria potentially seeing 100 to 150mm over the next few days. Conditions are expected to ease by Sunday as the storm system moves offshore.
