Mystery Canberra family's art collection worth up to $10 million heads to
A Canberra family is selling 28 major Australian art works for an estimated $7.2 to nearly $10 million.
An unnamed Canberra family is selling one of Australia's best private art collections. The sale is next week in Sydney.
The 28 lots include works by Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Margaret Olley, John Brack, Fred Williams and Brett Whiteley. Deutscher and Hackett auctioneers estimate the sale will bring between $7.2 million and nearly $10 million.
The collection started in the early 2000s. The owners knew celebrated architect John Andrews.
They bought pieces including Lloyd Rees's Opera House painting and Arthur Boyd's Shoalhaven landscape. Over two decades, the family added more works.
They built a unified collection. Works by different artists painting the same subject "just sing a harmony together".
Sidney Nolan's The Disguise from 1964, featuring Ned Kelly, is estimated at $700,000 to $900,000. The showing has drawn collectors described as having "a glint in their eye".
