Petition for lit skate park rejected while over half of teens lack exercise
Council rejected a petition for skate park lights despite more than half of local teens lacking exercise.
Bendigo council has rejected a petition signed by 244 people. The petition asked for lights at McKern Skate Park in Eaglehawk.
Council staff said lighting in the alcohol-free zone could make it harder to monitor drinking restrictions. Local data shows more than half of local teenagers aren't getting enough exercise.
More than 48 per cent of boys and 65.8 per cent of girls aged 12-17 aren't meeting recommended activity levels. Councillor Aaron Spong argued the council should at least study the idea rather than reject it outright.
Other councillors said setup costs and safety concerns meant they should wait.
