US set to expand military bases in Greenland under NATO deal
Denmark, Greenland and the US will let the US add military bases to Greenland under NATO command.
The three nations will sign the deal at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. The US already operates one military base in Greenland.
The US will now add sites at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. Narsarsuaq is a tiny settlement where the US closed a Cold War base in the 1950s.
Mestersvig currently hosts a Danish special forces dog sled patrol. The agreement shifts Arctic security from solely US and Danish control to NATO oversight.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said NATO will look after the Arctic under the deal. Trump will attend the signing ceremony with Denmark's and Greenland's prime ministers.
