Australia withdrew from West Bank sanctions coalition at last moment
Australia pulled out late from a 12-country statement supporting trade sanctions on Israeli settlements.
The UK, France, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden released a joint statement last week backing trade sanctions on West Bank Israeli businesses. Australia was involved in discussions leading up to the statement and had indicated openness to stronger action on the West Bank.
Australian diplomats withdrew from the coalition late in the process, according to eight diplomatic sources who spoke to the ABC. Canada was the only non-European country to join the statement.
European officials told the ABC they were surprised and disappointed by Australia's withdrawal. The Australian government said it was "working closely together" with international partners toward the same objective, but expressed concerns that blanket import bans could harm Palestinian businesses and workers.
