Kalyn Ponga marks a decade since his breakout NRL debut
Ponga stepped past Boyd ten years ago on debut and now captains Newcastle.
Ponga made his NRL debut a decade ago in the second week of finals for the Cowboys against the Broncos. At just 18, he broke through in just 16 minutes, stepping past Boyd and Ben Hunt before being ruled offside for obstruction.
Ponga has since won a Dally M Medal and Origin series, though several serious injuries interrupted his path. Now 28, Ponga captains the Knights and has re-signed for another four years.
Boyd is tipped to coach him in next year's State of Origin. Ponga reflected on the night he played alongside Cowboys legends like Johnathan Thurston: "The game itself, I just remember being outside 'Johnno' and thinking 'don't let him down'."
He feels he has evolved from an excited kid into a leader who understands what his club and community mean.
