Wollongong starts Pioneer Hall demolition to restore MacCabe Park green space
Wollongong council is demolishing Pioneer Hall to return green space to MacCabe Park as a skate park development proceeds.
Wollongong City Council has begun tearing down Pioneer Hall, a 1950s building closed since 2020. The goal is to create new grass at MacCabe Park.
A planned skate park in the south-eastern corner had raised community objections about lost green space. The council said the old hall was no longer fit for purpose.
Workers have already removed hazards, including lead-based paint from window frames. In the coming weeks, crews will pull down the structure and prepare the site for new turf.
Lord Mayor Tania Brown acknowledged the moment is bittersweet for people with memories of youth activities and concerts at the hall. But the park will transform into a welcoming space for skating, riding, relaxing and reflection.
