Children in mining-rich Pilbara take poverty case to parliament
Children in Australia's resource-rich Pilbara region recorded voices calling for a national child poverty strategy.
Children from South Hedland recorded voice messages about their lives that will be played to federal ministers and MPs in Canberra today. The Pilbara region exports billions of dollars in iron ore monthly, but children in South Hedland face profound disadvantage.
This includes poor housing, food shortages, and no air conditioning. The area has desert heat.
Young people told researchers about living in crowded homes with no cooling and very little food. The Youth Involvement Council in South Hedland and the Valuing Children Initiative recorded the children speaking directly.
The campaign now calls for a national strategy to end child poverty with clear measures and definitions.
