WA police given temporary powers before Land Forces 2026 defence expo

WA police have temporary powers to search bags and stop vehicles for 10 days before Land Forces 2026 on October 6.

Police in Western Australia have been given extra security powers as they prepare for Land Forces 2026. This is Australia's largest defence industry exhibition.

It runs October 6 to 8 in Perth. For 10 days from Thursday, officers can search people's bags and vehicles.

They can establish checkpoints and roadblocks. They can also issue lawful directions in the city.

Police can seize items deemed a safety risk or likely to disrupt the event. WA Police Minister Reece Whitby said the move aimed to prevent a repeat of incidents at the previous Land Forces in Melbourne.

Protesters splashed police and horses with urine and acid. They threw objects and started fires.

Thousands of interstate and international delegates are expected to attend. Whitby rejected claims the powers target peaceful protest.

He said demonstrators will be protected if they voice their views safely.
