Qantas ground service workers are planning a 24-hour strike on Thursday, September 24, after negotiations stalled on pay and conditions. The dispute stems from 2021, when former CEO Alan Joyce illegally fired 1,800 airport ground workers.
Joyce replaced them with outsourced staff to weaken union power. The remaining 650 ground crew now work under various enterprise agreements.
"Workers do not take this action lightly," said Transport Workers' Union National Secretary Michael Kaine. "The same despicable Alan Joyce tactic of splintering the workforce has been dusted off by the new bosses."
The strike will affect QantasLink and Qantas Freight services. This will disrupt regional flights and freight services, including Australia Post shipments.
Qantas said it has contingency plans to minimise customer impact, though disruptions are expected during school holidays.
