North Korea launches projectile as military tensions simmer
North Korea fired an unidentified projectile Saturday, a day after joint South Korean, Japanese and US military drills ended.
North Korea launched an unidentified projectile toward the sea east of the Korean Peninsula on Saturday. South Korea's defence ministry confirmed it.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff are still studying the projectile's specs and range. The test came one day after South Korea, Japan and the US finished joint military drills.
These drills test readiness against North Korea's weapons. In August, North Korea test-fired more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles.
It also ordered its military to stay on high alert during training. US President Donald Trump previously said he scaled back military drills with South Korea.
He saw them as hostile to Pyongyang. Trump said he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un later in 2026.
