Senate investigates whether $560m grants favoured Labor seats

The Senate voted to start an inquiry. It looked into claims the federal government awarded grants mostly to Labor-held or target electorates.

The Senate opened an inquiry into a $560 million grants program. The government gave 220 grants with no competition.

Most went to seats Labor held or wanted to win. A $6 million grant to Marrickville Golf Club in the Prime Minister's electorate caused controversy.

Anthony Albanese holds an undeclared honorary membership at the club. He says he didn't know he had it.

The Coalition, Greens, One Nation, and independent senators joined to start the inquiry. It will report by November 18.

This is like the sports rorts scandal under Morrison. Then a minister overruled advice to favor Coalition seats.

That damaged the Morrison government a lot. Now Labor faces the same scrutiny.
