New Lambton in Newcastle has kept Gail and Steve Harmon living in the suburb for 35 years, moving just a few streets away each time. The village atmosphere around Regent Street and its shops, cafes and restaurants creates a strong pull.
Real estate agent Luke Wilson said three generations of the same family regularly live within walking distance of each other. About 68 per cent of homes are owner-occupied.
Families often stay 15 to 20 years once they arrive, with kids growing up there, buying their first home locally, then their own children attending the same schools. The couple is downsizing but moving only 300 metres, staying close to the shops and the IGA they have used for years.
