Panama earthquakes prompt state of emergency as damage hits all 10 provinces
About 420 homes and the same number of public schools were damaged, and 27 people were reported injured.
Two earthquakes on Friday measured magnitude 7.7 and 6.6 and toppled buildings near the epicentre. Panama's government declared a state of emergency on Saturday as aftershocks kept shaking communities.
Seismologists recorded more than 100 aftershocks, including some as strong as magnitude 5.8. Officials did not attribute any deaths to the earthquakes, but damage was reported in all 10 provinces.
Civil protection officials reported 27 people with injuries, ranging from minor to moderate. About 420 homes and the same number of public schools were damaged.
In La Villa de Los Santos, homes and a historical Catholic church collapsed. The US government pledged $5 million in humanitarian aid and sent a disaster response team.
