Designer launches fashion brand honouring her Myanmar tribal heritage
Bettymay Luri, 28, quit her degree to launch Luri & Co, an online fashion brand named after her Myanmar tribe.
Luri, based in Launceston, designs statement pieces she says let women express confidence without speaking. Bettymay Luri chose her business name to reflect her identity and heritage; her surname is both a family name and her tribe from a Myanmar village.
Bettymay Luri's mother and aunt design clothes, and her aunt runs a business back home. Luri said her tribe had separated as people moved out of the country trying to find a better life, but technology now helps them reconnect.
She left a business and finance degree in late 2025, convinced the brand was worth the risk. The business officially launched in May 2026.
She is hosting a pop-up at a local mall Saturday to let customers feel the fabric and see how garments fit.
