On August 4, Smart allegedly choked a woman for about 30 seconds. Smart kicked her, stopped her leaving a bedroom, and headbutted her.
The court heard Smart has served multiple jail terms. He has a lengthy history of the same kind of offending.
Bail was refused despite help being offered. The Court Integrated Services Program offered to assist with drug use and behaviour change.
Senior Constable Kevin Mullins told the court that such programs were not a "magic wand" for his actions. Bryant remanded Smart in custody until October 9.
