De Gruchy triple murder case: motive remains unsolved three decades on
Matthew De Gruchy was convicted in 1996 of bashing three family members to death, but his motive remains unknown.
In March 1996, De Gruchy killed his mother Jennifer, sister Sarah, and brother Adrian at their Albion Park Rail home. No murder weapon was ever found, though police believed it was a wheel brace or car jack handle from the family car.
De Gruchy maintained his innocence at trial but was convicted on circumstantial evidence. Police found a hand-written checklist in a dam near his girlfriend's home, recovered after two months underwater.
The note, in his handwriting, listed names and appeared to detail the murders. De Gruchy claimed it referred to his 18th birthday party, but the court found it suggested a degree of premeditation rather than murder committed on the spur of the moment.
Three decades later, his motive remains a mystery.
