Almost 90 per cent of Australians trust free-to-air TV more than social media, AI and most other news sources.
The report, released in Canberra on Tuesday by Deloitte for Free TV Australia, shows commercial free-to-air television remains the most trusted news source in Australia and contributes $2.4 billion to the economy.
The findings put data behind what broadcasters have long claimed: that television gives Australians 'shared stories, shared facts and shared values'. Free TV Australia's chief executive Bridget Fair said the report underscores television as 'cultural infrastructure' for the country.
Fair warned that this 'cannot be taken for granted' and called for policy action to address competition failures in ad technology, protect Australian content from AI theft, and keep free access to major events for all Australians regardless of where they live.
