Canberra volunteers hand out 100 first aid kits to homeless community
St John Ambulance ACT distributed 100 free first aid kits to homeless people outside a Canberra food bank this week.
Street Side Medics, a volunteer group, offers free medical care to homeless people every Thursday evening in Civic. This week, St John Ambulance ACT joined them outside the Vinnies food bank.
Martin Fisk, chief executive officer of St John Ambulance ACT, and his team gave out 100 free first aid kits to homeless people. Fisk explained that homeless people often can't access clean water and dressings for small cuts.
Small injuries can turn into serious infections. The first aid kits help people look after their own health.
Street Side Medics volunteer manager Mark Ginswick said the kits support people who haven't used medical services for a long time. The Street Side Medics clinic runs Thursday evenings from 5pm to 7pm on Genge Street in Civic.
