Sydney's scorching spring day flipped in minutes when a powerful southerly wind swept across the city on Monday. Sydney Airport fell from 31.6C to 21.9C between 10am and 10.10am.
In Richmond, the drop was even steeper: from 35.4C to 25.3C just after midday. Observatory Hill had hit 28.9C at 9am, the highest spring reading in 17 years.
The Bureau of Meteorology said a large high-pressure system over southeastern Australia was bringing warm, dry and sunny conditions across most of the nation before the sudden change. Showers were expected along the coast from Sydney to the Gold Coast on Tuesday, with inland thunderstorms across Western Australia.
By Tuesday, Sydney is forecast to reach only 19C.
