Canberra trial offers households $5000-a-year energy savings
The $8.2 million Go Electric tool links up to 1000 Canberra households with rebates. These rebates help cut energy bills.
Banks, a suburb in Tuggeranong, will host Australia's first household electrification trial. ARENA (Australian Renewable Energy Agency) is funding it.
The Go Electric digital platform is a one-stop shop. It matches households with available rebates and subsidies.
Then it guides them through installing solar panels, batteries, electric heating and vehicle-to-grid systems. These systems let compatible electric vehicles return power to the grid.
The two-year trial is open to renters, owner-occupiers and low-income households. Advocacy group Rewiring Australia says households could save up to $5000 a year.
They can save this by switching from gas to electric appliances. They can also add solar and battery storage.
The trial will help simplify a complex process. Normally it involves up to fourteen different trades.
