Man sentenced to 18 months jail for strangling and assaulting his mother
Hamish Liam Reddy, 26, was sentenced to 18 months jail for strangling and punching his 60-year-old mother in June 2024.
Justice Robert Pearce sentenced Reddy on September 18 after a jury found him guilty in August of two counts of strangulation and one count of assault. Reddy had also pleaded guilty to another assault charge.
The judge described the attack as a breach of trust inherent in the relationship between a son and mother. During the June 2024 incident, Reddy became agitated when his mother said she had no tobacco to give him.
When she tried to leave the room, he pushed her onto the bed and grabbed her around the throat, telling her he hated her and wanted to kill her. He strangled her again minutes later and then punched her face near her jaw.
The judge found Reddy's relationship with his mother had been unstable, but she had agreed to let him move back in early that year. Her victim impact statement described ongoing fear and lack of safety.
Nine months of Reddy's sentence has been suspended for 18 months after his release.
