Man charged with bus abuse of 13-year-old Muslim teen
Charged with stalking and intimidation over a September 10 incident, he was refused bail and faces court on Wednesday.
On September 10, video footage showed a man on an inner-western Sydney bus verbally abusing a 13-year-old Muslim girl with repeated slurs. The Year 8 student told the man she was born in Australia and reminded him of her age, but the abuse continued.
Passengers and the teen reported the incident to police after the bus reached Strathfield. Officers arrested a 50-year-old man on Tuesday at a home in Greenacre.
Authorities charged him with stalking and intimidation intending fear or physical harm. He was refused bail and will appear before Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday.
Video showed the man also made death threats against the girl and people of her faith. Janna and her mother told the ABC the attack was disgusting.
