Nullarbor border sign gets ochre and ocean makeover
The ochre and ocean design won 888 votes, almost 80 per cent, in the public poll for the iconic Nullarbor crossing.
The WA-SA border sign has stood tall for three decades and is now getting redesigned. Ochre and ocean beat the alternative 'bush to beach' option decisively in a public vote.
The new sign and shelter, 4.5 metres tall and 11 metres long, will stand along the Eyre Highway at the Nullarbor crossing. Demolition of the current sign starts next month.
Installation happens in early 2027. The $900,000 project will be funded entirely by Western Australia.
Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti said the design reflects 'the striking colours of the border landscape'. The sign draws thousands of Nullarbor travellers who stop for photos each year.
