Mayfield Boomerangs claim back-to-back Newcastle Baseball titles
The Boomerangs defeated White Sox 5-2 in the Newcastle Baseball grand final to claim consecutive first-grade premierships.
The Mayfield Boomerangs won their second straight Newcastle Baseball title on Saturday. The Boomerangs beat White Sox 5-2 at home in Wallsend.
The Boomerangs led 3-2 at the midpoint of the seventh inning before pulling away to a 5-2 advantage. White Sox, chasing their first premiership since 1986, could not recover.
The Boomerangs ended a 32-year drought last year. Captain-coach Joel Pettigrew said the back-to-back win proved their first success was real.
Defense was the difference, Pettigrew said. Both sides matched for much of a tight contest.
White Sox had a strong campaign under new coach Shane 'Bucket' Barclay. They finished third before beating minor premiers Belmont in the preliminary final.
