Perth man charged after toddler filmed steering car from his lap

Jake Douglas Smith, 30, faces reckless driving charges after video showed a young child unrestrained on his lap.

Jake Douglas Smith, 30, was charged with reckless driving after police alleged he allowed a young child to sit unrestrained on his lap and appear to control the steering wheel while driving in Alkimos on September 11.

A video of the stunt was uploaded to social media, with audio of someone saying 'Look where you're going. Don't crash.'

Smith appeared in Joondalup Magistrates Court on Friday representing himself and has not yet entered a plea. Jake Douglas Smith is due back in court at the end of October.

Police are investigating the incident based on the video evidence, which appears to show a deliberate stunt endangering a child.
