Driver with five times legal BAC limit sentenced for crashing into house

Man returned blood alcohol level of 0.284 after losing control and hitting house in Holt on 23 April.

John Biar Abit Biar, 27, was sentenced to one year and three months' jail on 1 October by ACT Magistrates Court, with the sentence suspended after he served five months. John Biar drove a friend's car on 23 April while intoxicated, lost control in Holt, crashed through a Colorbond fence and struck the house, causing extensive damage.

Police found him at a friend's home with his badly damaged car in the driveway. John Biar was arrested at the property and returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.284, more than five times the legal driving limit.

The prosecutor told the court that only good fortune prevented serious injury or death to the house's residents. Biar pleaded guilty to two counts of damaging property and one count of dangerous driving.

He was born in South Sudan, moved to Australia in 2002, and worked in construction before the crash.
