Adelaide school charged over hammer-throw accident that critically injured
A Catholic school has been charged over a hammer-throw accident that critically injured a student during athletics training in 2024.
In September 2024, a student at Christian Brothers College Adelaide was hit by a hammer-throw ball during athletics training at St Albans Reserve in Clearview. The student suffered head injuries and was left in a coma.
SafeWork SA has now charged the school and Edmund Rice Education Australia Colleges Ltd, its parent company. The watchdog says students were exposed to safety risks, the school failed to give proper training and supervision, and failed to follow safety procedures.
The safety cage did not meet standards and hammer throw and javelin events were too close together. If found guilty, the school faces fines up to $1.5 million.
