Mick Mundine charged with sexual assault of child; councillor breaks 40-year
Prominent Sydney Indigenous leader Mick Mundine, 79, charged with sexually assaulting Yvonne Weldon when she was 15 in 1986.
Mick Mundine, a prominent Sydney Indigenous leader, was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault, including assault on a child. The alleged abuse occurred in Redfern in June 1986 when the complainant was 15.
Sydney City councillor Yvonne Weldon, the first Aboriginal councillor in the City of Sydney, confirmed on Instagram she is the complainant. "I have carried this for 40 years.
It is time to no longer carry it," she wrote. Weldon said she came up to help break the silence around abuse and to support other survivors.
A strike force was established in December 2025 to investigate. Mundine was questioned at Newtown Police Station before being charged.
He was granted police bail and will face Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday. Mundine has been the chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company for most of its 50-year history.
His lawyer said he will contest the charges.
