Woman stays sober 52 days, avoids jail over violence breach
Chantel Anne Ritchie, 46, broke a domestic violence order. But she avoided prison by staying sober for 52 days.
Chantel Anne Ritchie faced court on Monday after breaking an apprehended violence order meant to protect her mother. The Albury woman faced three charges this year involving incidents at her mother's home, including assault and threatening to drown the older woman's dogs.
Ritchie's battle with alcohol addiction reached a critical point on July 3. She drank hand sanitiser that day, violating a court condition to stay sober for at least 12 hours before contact with her mother.
Police found her severely intoxicated in her mother's garage. A half-empty hand sanitiser bottle sat beside her.
Before appearing in court, Ritchie told her lawyer something. She believed prison was her only option, or death.
But her defence solicitor highlighted a turning point. Ritchie had now gone 52 days without drinking.
