Hawthorn adds water polo international as AFL rookie
Hawthorn signed 21-year-old water polo goalkeeper Ollie Purcell as a Category B rookie.
Hawthorn has recruited Ollie Purcell as a Category B rookie. The 21-year-old is a water polo goalkeeper who has played for Australia.
Purcell is 195 centimetres tall. Purcell was vice-captain of Australia's youth men's squad at the 2022 and 2025 World Championships.
Purcell has trained with Australia's Olympic squad since 2023. He recently played for the Aussie Sharks in Japan.
Purcell played junior AFL for Greythorn Falcons. He played secondary school football for St Kevin's as a key defender.
Hawthorn expects his football to take time to develop but sees promise in his elite sporting background and physical attributes. The club says he will benefit from mentorship by experienced Hawks defenders.
